Kasturi and the Algorithm of Self

Kasturi (कस्तुरी) is the Hindi word for “musk”, a fragrant substance obtained from the gland of the musk deer. In Indian culture, Kasturi is also a symbol of purity and innocence.

A deer is enchanted by a captivating scent and embarks on a quest to find its source. After roaming far and wide, the deer finally discovers that the alluring aroma is emanating from its own self. In a moment of realization, the deer understands that it has been searching for its own essence all along.

This story is often used as a metaphor for self-discovery and the idea that what we seek is often within us.

Through my meditation practice, I’ve been reflecting on my daily experiences and identifying the moments that bring me joy. While these moments bring instant happiness, the awareness of their fleeting nature simultaneously fills me with a sense of melancholy. This introspection has allowed me to develop a neutral perspective, akin to a self-refining algorithm, where I acknowledge and learn from my experiences, recognizing both their value and impermanence.

This insight hasn’t diminished my enthusiasm for life or my desire to seek out new experiences but rather has taught me the importance of cultivating detachment and acceptance, allowing me to appreciate the present moment without attachment to its duration.

Given this, we reach a conclusion that the outward seeking of joy is a delusion which we are all part of everyday and every instant.

What we seek is within us!

Even a moment’s awareness isn’t enough to ward off the outward seeking provided it is so ingrained in the thought process.

It is when we realise that we all need to seek our own Kasturi. The inward seeking, or as I call the “only true seeking”, is extremely tough and time-taking, unlike the outwardly one. However, it is believed that it is the only way out to quench our thirst :)
